These are the phases of weapon changes Umi goes through during the duration of the manga.

rapier

First appearance in volume 1 Because magic is useless in the Forest of Silence, Presea lends the Magic Knights weapons that will help them fight their way through the forest to get to the legendary Escudo. Presea's weapons choose their owner. Umi receives a simple rapier.
 

 

magic knight rapier

First appearance in volume 2 With the Escudo, Presea creates weapons for the Magic Knights. Umi's weapon is a Rapier that has a more elaborate hilt than the simple rapier that was lend to her. These weapons made from Escudo are specially made for Magic Knights, they evolve with the heart of the owner and only the owner can use the weapons. If anyone touches Umi's sword it turns into water.
 

2nd rapier

First appearance in volume 3 Umi's rapier evolves when she passes Celes’ test on strength of heart. The rapier is now thinner with a longer handle and the hilt has a blue jewel on it.
 

 

 

3rd rapier

First appearance in volume 3 Again Umi's rapier evolves when Fuu passes her strength of heart test with her own mashin, Windom. The rapier hilt now has a distinct dragon on it wrapping around the gem on the sword.

 

 

final rapier

First appearance in volume 3 Umi's rapier has reached its final evolution stage. The rapier is now a true Magic Knight weapon. The rapier hilt now consists of a dragon's head with two protruding dragon wings on each side surrounding the gem.
