arc one
These are all the characters that appear in Arc one (volume 1-3) of Magic Knight Rayearth.
princess emeraude
First appearance in volume 1 Emeraude is the princess and Pillar of Cephiro. Her role as Pillar is to pray constantly to keep Cephiro in balance. She summons the Magic Knights in order to "Save Cephiro." As a Pillar, one cannot have feelings for others except for the world of Cephiro.
spoiler ahead Emeraude falls in love with Zagato and she calls the Magic Knights to come kill her since she has broken the rule of the Pillar by falling in love with someone. When Princess Emeraude indicates to the Knights to "Save Cephiro" it meant that they had to kill her. After the Magic Knights kill Zagato, Emeraude turns evil and begins attacking the Magic Knights for killing her love. Hikaru kills Emeraude reluctantly before Cephiro crumbles under the unstable Pillar's wrath.
guru clef
First appearance in volume 1 Clef is the High Mage and Guru of Cephiro. He is 745 years old, although he looks like a little child. Clef is the most powerful mage found in Cephiro. He helps the Magic Knights on their journey to becoming true Knights by teaching them their first magic attacks and giving them armor.
spoiler ahead Clef is a very complicated character. He returns in Arc Two as someone who is trying to keep Cephiro together since after Emeraude's downfall the world is crumbling until they find another Pillar. Clef does not believe that the Pillar system is the correct way to run the world.
zagato
First appearance in volume 1 High Priest Zagato traps Princess Emeraude in a water dungeon. He sends Alcione, Ascot, Caldina, and Lafarga against the Knights hoping to kill them before the girls becoming true Legendary Knights. The Knights believe that they must save Princess Emeraude from Zagato...or do they?
spoiler ahead The only reason why Zagato was sending his henchmen after the Knights was to stop them from reaching Princess Emeraude and killing her. The real reason why Magic Knights are brought to Cephiro is to kill the Pillar, and Zagato knew this. He was in love with Emeraude and the Knights mistakingly kill him in the process of trying to save her.
alcione
First appearance in volume 1 She is the first person that Zagato sends to kill the Legendary Magic Knights. Alcione's magic attacks are ice oriented.
spoiler ahead The first time she tries to kill the Knights, clef stops her. However, she ambushes the Knights again outside the Forest of Silence. Umi uses Water Dragon to finally hurt her badly enough that Alcione returns to Zagato. She actually loves him, which is why she is doing this, but he does not reciprocate this love. He kills her for her failure.
mokona
First appearance in volume 1 Mokona is a fluffy animal that looks like a bunny. He basically follows the Knights around all the time after the Knights find out that Clef gave him to them. No one seems to understand Mokona except Hikaru. Mokona also provides transportation for the Knights around Cephiro. Is there more to the eye than a fluffy bunny?
spoiler ahead Mokona is actually the creator of worlds, both Earth and Cephiro. After seeing the corruption of Earth, he decided to create a system that was to be pure, the Pillar system. Hikaru tells him that this is wrong and that people should be allowed to work things out and live peacefully. Mokona agrees and he and his mashins leave to create another world.
presea
First appearance in volume 1 She is the master artisan of Cephiro. Presea basically makes all the armor and weapons in Cephiro. She makes legendary weapons for the Knights out of Escudo.
spoiler ahead One of my favorite characters, Presea appears back in arc two to give back the legendary weapons to the Knights, when they are transported back. Presea has a soft spot for Hikaru, but Mokona annoys the living daylights out of her. Presea somewhat has the same attitude about Mokona as Umi does, but more extreme.
ferio
First appearance in volume 1 He is a mysterious swordsman that the girls meet in the Forest of Silence. Fuu tricks him into being their protector out of the Forest. He figures out that they are the Magic Knights and tells them the legend of the Magic Knights. After escorting the Knights out of the Forest he leaves Fuu one of his earrings.
spoiler ahead Ferio is actually the Prince of Cephiro, brother of Emeraude. He does not blame the Knights for killing his sister; he himself did not actually know the true legend of the Magic Knights. Although he is not strongest of heart, he is still trying to take care of the people of Cephiro. He also gives Fuu his earring again when she loses it after going back to Tokyo. He has a romantic relationship with Fuu, because at the end of the series he puts the earring on her finger like a ring.
ascot
First appearance in volume 2 Ascot is the second person that Zagato sends out to destroy the Magic Knights. Ascot is a Palu, which means he is able to summon creatures to help him fight. He attacks the Magic Knights in the Water Shrine.
spoiler ahead He's actually a very nice person whom is only working for Zagato, because Zagato promised him that his monster friends would be safe. Ascot does not want his summoned creature friends to be hurt in any way. Umi feels the same way about her friends, so they reach a compromise not to hurt each other or their friends. In Arc two, Ascot returns as a full grown young man, specifically taller than Umi. He has fallen in love with Umi and used his will to make him more mature.
caldina
First appearance in volume 3 She is a charm dancer, who uses her dances as attacks. The third person to be sent against the Magic Knights, Caldina waits for them in the Wind Shrine.
spoiler ahead Fuu finds out that Caldina is only working for Zagato for the money. She indicates that she's a poor dancer from Chizeta who only wants money. Fuu convinces Caldina not to fight just for the money and Caldina agrees. She makes a return in Arc Two staying in the Cephiro palace. She has fallen in love with Lafarga.
lafarga
First appearance in volume 3 The fourth person sent to kill the Magic Knights, Lafarga is actually the captain of the guard in Cephiro. He is hypnotised by Zagato to work for him. Lafarga challenges Hikaru to a sword fight in the Fire Shrine.
spoiler ahead Hikaru refuses to use magic on Lafarga because she wants to have a fair sword fight. Unfortunately, Hikaru is overpowered by Lafarga's skills. He decides to use Hikaru's own sword to kill her. However, when he touches Hikaru's sword, it turns into fire. As Presea earlier indicated, Magic Knight weapons can only be used by their specific owners. (If anyone else touches Umi's sword it turns into water and Fuu's sword becomes extra heavy.) Lafarga is burned out of his hypnotic state by Hikaru's sword. He returns in Arc Two to make comments about how Lantis, brother of Zagato, has returned to Cephiro to spy on them from Autozam.
