Our solar system guardians
From past, present, and future the original eight senshi that fight along side Sailormoon continue their work as guardians and princesses of their planet namesakes.
"To lay down our [transformation] pens is the same as laying down our lives."
The first four senshi introduced, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus were assigned back in the Silver Millennium by the original Queen Serenity to be Princess Serenity's personal guardians. The holy sword of the Silver Millennium made out of Ginzoushou is wielded by the first four senshi, which Venus' uses to stab Queen Beryl to death. In the future of Crystal Tokyo, the four senshi are often seen the Crystal Palace in their senshi form.
"Our lives, death, despair, hope, and dreams...we will protect you...no matter what happens!"
The outer Solar system senshi Pluto, Uranus, Neptune, and Saturn have differing roles that focus more on the outer defense of the Solar system rather than on the Moon Princess. Because of this, they are often seen as distant and solitary in comparison to the first four. It is not until later in the series that Pluto, Uranus, Neptune, and Saturn becomes more involved and open to the other characters.
In Act 41 with the power of the Ginzishou and Golden Crystal all eight senshi are revealed to actually be princesses of their respective planets. Each senshi's power guardian also appears during this scene, which are basically miniature versions of themselves in senshi form, telling each senshi to lend their power to Sailormoon's Holy Grail triggering the transformation into an Eternal senshi. In order to lend their power, each senshi shouts out their respective castle name on their mother star (planet).
The color aura of each senshi is important in the overall series. The color, or aura, each senshi radiates is a personfication of their personality as well as the characteristics that Takeuchi Naoko has given them. Many fans believe a senshi's fuku color is their specific aura color and/or the senshi's favorite color (i.e. Jupiter's colors are green and pink, Mars' colors are red and purple), however this has been proven false by many of Takeuchi's artbook images. According the aura image above, Takeuchi notes that she drew the senshi outlines all in their representing color. The first four senshi are also paralleled with the days of the week's colors (in Japanese). In essence, each princess is assigned only one specific color, which can best be seen by their princess gowns, eternal fuku, and planet symbol on their forehead.
Each of the princesses resides in their own castle on their respective planets. These castles were constructed by Queen Serenity in the Silver Millennium when each princess was born, as noted by Sailorpluto. The senshi draw their powers from their planets (often called stars) and base their personal headquarters at their respective castles. Only Pluto's, Uranus', and Neptune's castles are ever shown in the manga (Venus' is shown in Codename Wa: Sailor V manga).
One of the aspects that made me decide to focus on the royalty/future aspect of the series were these princess dresses. You barely get a glimpse of them in the original manga, but they look pretty amazing! In the artbook notes, Takeuchi indicates that she based all of her princesses dresses off of wedding magazine gowns and in full dress they all wear cloaks and sit on shell/flower thrones.
Before Material Artbook scans were widely available in 2001, I was lucky enough to scan them in and introduce them as an original aspect of the site (back in the day).

Leader of the senshi that protects the Moon Princess, Venus takes her position very seriously early on, blaming and distrusting herself on her own abilities and strength when she is unable to protect her friends.
Aura Gold/orange Happy, courageous, successful.
Venus is often associated with the colors orange and yellow, however her prototype color is gold, as noted in the Material's Collection. Gold refers to the one of the days of the week color in Japan, where each of the first four senshi is related with (Venus falls in the day of Gold). However, orange seems to have become Venus' modified color, due to the fact that it's a bit difficult to color in gold. Orange is a vibrant color that is often noted as flamboyant and energetic. It is a combination of red and yellow so it shares common attributes with both colors, however orange is less aggressive than red and more calm than yellow. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation. In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance.
Magellan was a probe that was sent on August 10, 1990 to orbit and map the planet Venus. The probe was able to map 98% of the surface of Venus before it plunged into the atmosphere on October 11, 1994. Some sections of Magellan are thought to have landed on Earth. The probe's name comes from Ferdinand Magellan who was a famous sea explorer. Magellan's mission is still the most detailed map we have of Venus. Venus' castle is shown in Codename wa Sailor V, but not in Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon.
Just as intelligent in the future, it is hinted that Chibiusa's computer companion Luna-P was created by Mercury.
Aura Blue Peaceful, sincere, affectionate.
Mercury's color ranges from light blue to blue. The color blue is calm and cool; it can also be strong, steadfast or light and friendly. In nature, blue is the color of water and the sky. The color is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes youth, spirituality, trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, peace, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. In heraldry, blue is used to symbolize piety and sincerity. Light blue is also associated with health, healing, tranquility, understanding, and softness.
Mercury's castle was named after an unmanned space mission program, known as the Mariner program. One of its more significant success stories was the Mariner 10, which was launched on November 3, 1973 and was the only spacecraft to ever approach Mercury. It flew past Mercury three times in total, which allowed half of Mercury's surface to be mapped. The Mariner 10 was the last of the Mariner program's spacecrafts after contact with Mariner 10 was lost on March 24, 1975. The new spacecrafts were renamed as Voyagers.
Aura Red Energy, determination, passion.
There is no question that red is Mar's color. Red is characterized as a warm, if not hot color. It's a strong color that can be associated with a range of emotions from passion and love to violence and war. The color red can also indicate power, action, confidence, courage, and vitality. In some cultures, red denotes purity, joy, and celebration. In many Asian countries red is the color of happiness, prosperity, and good luck. Red is also the color of fire and blood.
Castle Phoebes Deimos
Phobos Deimos Castle is actually based off of the two moons that orbit Mars. Phobos "fright" is the larger and innermost of the two moons. It is one of the smallest known moons in the solar system...sometimes it is known as Mars I. Deimos "dread" is the smaller and outermost of the two moons. Both moons are based off of Greek mythology's characters "fright" and "dread," which were sons to the god Ares (Mars). Phobos was also a space program mission that was sent to orbit the planet Mars on July 7, 1988 by the Soviet Union.
Aura Green Growth, abundance, vitality.
As the senshi of wood, more specificially oak, green is definitely Jupiter's color. Her colors are reminicent of the forest and nature itself. Green is represented as life, renewal, growth, nature, fertility, and well being. Green is a restful color with some of the same calming attributes of blue. Green itself is the color of nature from the abundance of flora including trees and grass. The color green also denotes balance, harmony, endurance, hope, stability and safety. In heraldry, green indicates growth and hope.
Io is the innermost of the four Galilean moons (discovered by Galileo Galilei on January 7, 1610...the four moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto). Io is also the fourth largest moon in the solar system. This moon was named after Io, the lover of Zeus (Jupiter) in Greek mythology and daughter of the river god Inachus. When Hera, wife of Zeus, found that Io was the lover of Zeus, Zeus turned Io into a cow to protect her. Before the suggested name of Io, this moon was commonly called Jupiter I.
Given the task of Guardian of the Time Gate, by the original Queen Serenity, Pluto is often depicted as a very solitary character. However, she also has a very close relationship with Small Lady (Chibiusa) and Diana. There is also a questionable romantic relationship with King Endymion visit here
Aura Black Stability, earthy, reliable.
As the senshi of time, Pluto's color of black lends to her air of mystery. Considered the negation of color, black can be serious, conventional, mysterious, sexy, and sophisticated. Black is also associated with death, earth, stability, power, elegance, formality, and evil. Most often, black is known as a mysterious color that is also associated with fear and the unknown. Black can also denotes strength and authority; it is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious color. In heraldry, black is the symbol of grief.
Charon was thought to be Pluto's only moon. It was discovered by James Christy on June 22, 1978. Christy named the moon Charon, but pronounced it differently to match his wife's name, Charlene (the "ch" is pronounced softly like "sh"). The name Charon is also synonymous in Greek mythology to Charon the ferryman of the dead in the underworld, whom had close ties with the god Hades (Pluto). In 2005, two new moons (Nix and Hydra) were found. As of 2006, the planet Pluto was demoted to a dwarf planet and Charon was noted to be Pluto's double dwarf planet.
Aura Navy/dark blue Tranquil, intuitive, trustworthy.
It is one of the more interesting concepts that Uranus shares the same color as Mercury, but the darker version. In any case dark/navy blue also has its own attributes and characteristics (to read more of general blue attributes, see Mercury). Dark blue usually represents intuition, meditation, depth, expertise, deep contemplation, knowledge, power, integrity, stability, and seriousness. Blue is also a masculine preferred color (when compared to other colors such as pink, red, purple).
Uranus' moon Miranda is the smallest and innermost of all of Uranus' major moons and is also has one of the most geological features in the Solar System even though it is only 500km in diameter. Miranda was named after Prospero's daughter from the play The Tempest by Shakespeare. The character Miranda was naive and a sheltered girl, but held great intelligence. The moon was discovered by Gerald Kuiper and is often designated as Uranus V.
Aura Aquamarine Motivated, active, dynamic.
Neptune has one of the hardest auras to distinguish. Her color can be called sea-green, turquoise, teal, aqua, aquamarine, or any of the variety of other shades. Perhaps, Takeuchi did this intentially to mirror Neptune's color with the colors of the ocean, which are always changing. The color aquamarine is refreshing and sophisticated. It is a mix of blue and green that has the same calming effects of both colors. The color is associated with emotional healing, protection, and water.
Triton is Neptune's largest moon. The moon was discovered by William Lassell on October 10, 1846, which was just 17 days after the planet Neptune was discovered. Triton was named after the son of Neptune (god of the sea) in Greek mythology. Neptune is one of the three big gods in mythology. Jupiter ruled the heavens, Neptune the sea, and Pluto the underworld. Triton is often designated as Neptune I.
Saturn holds a tremendous responsibility as she has the ability to set down her glaive and perform death and rebirth on a planet. However, her power is not always fool-proof. It is noted in Act 41 during the story of how Queen Nehelenhia came to be, Saturn finds out that she had missed a spot when trying to extinguish all evil the first time she set her glaive down to destroy the Silver Millennium.
Unlike the other eight senshi, Saturn holds a double responsibility of being guardian to Usagi as well as leader of the senshi that will protect Small Lady when she becomes queen.
Aura Purple Spiritual, passionate, visionary.
As one of the two senshi (Chibimoon is the other) that is a senshi in the present and future, I feel as though Takeuchi saved this special color for Saturn. The color purple is the symbol of royalty, spirituality, magic, and mystery. Opposite colors of cool blue and hot red create this color and also share attributes from both colors. Purple is also associated with mourning, power, nobility, ambition, wisdom, dignity, and indepedence.
Titan is the largest moon of Saturn and the second largest moon in the solar system after Jupiter's Ganymede. Christiaan Huygens discovered Titan on March 25, 1655. Titan is also the only moon in the solar system that has a dense atmosphere (layers of gases that surround a specific mass i.e. Earth, Venus, Mars). The name Titan is derived from Greek mythology's Titans, which were the brothers and sisters to Chronos (Saturn) and were trapped later by Zeus.
